Dear Colleagues and Friends,

Obesity and body composition

Once again, this week's articles show the benefits of olive oil in the context of a global dietary pattern, particularly the Mediterranean diet. A systematic review and meta-analysis summarized the existence of evidence linking this dietary pattern to physical fitness. The authors concluded that greater adherence to the Mediterranean dietary pattern increases physical fitness, particularly through its effects on the cardiorespiratory and musculoskeletal components. Physical fitness is a key indicator of adult health. Indeed, obesity is one of the most important public health problems, not only in itself but also because of the increased risk of obesity-related diseases such as dyslipidemia, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and many types of cancer. Adding to this summary, another review on the Mediterranean diet is proposed as the healthiest dietary pattern available to combat obesity and prevent several noncommunicable diseases. This review highlights the benefits of this diet, especially when it is high in extra virgin olive oil.

Extra virgin olive oil is an important source of dietary polyphenols, which play a key role in the benefits of the Mediterranean diet (MED). The green-MED diet, with a higher consumption of green tea, walnuts, and Wolffia globosa, but also a lower red meat intake which seeks to enhance the effect of this mechanism of action, and it has already been shown in a clinical trial to be effective in reducing visceral adiposity.

But, what are the implications of these benefits? Do they reach the population? How can a person outside of the research world know the benefits of olive oil or the Mediterranean diet? YouTube is, without doubt, one of the main sources of information for a large part of the population. A group of researchers has analyzed the existing content on the Mediterranean diet on this platform. This group of researchers have concluded that the quality of the videos is highly variable, moreover, they do not correlate with the level of user engagement. Social networks are undoubtedly a tool with great potential from a health point of view, so it is worth exploring this method of scientific communication in more detail.
