In this week's newsletter, we would like to highlight the CARDIOPREV study, a randomized study for secondary cardiovascular prevention with a total of 1002 patients. This study is a large RCT that compared the effects of a Mediterranean diet (with free provision of extra virgin olive oil) versus a low-fat diet, and reported an adjusted HR= 0.719 (95% CI 0.541-0.957) for the primary endpoint (a composite of mayor CV events, including myocardial infarction, revascularization, ischemic stroke, peripheral artery disease and CV death). This study has had an impact on the media, such as the article in the health section highlighting the importance of consuming healthy fats, especially extra virgin olive oil, as opposed to low-fat diets.
